It's Week 2 of Genius Hour, and we have our first task ahead of us: sewing and kitting. To make it even more interesting, we've decided to split up into teams. Hopefully, we'll have something to show as a token of our handiwork. Gabby and William will be sewing, and Bonnie Jo and Kathryn will be knitting. We don't have any experience in either areas, so who knows how this'll turn out?
Gabby and William are going to meet over the long weekend. They have some mixed feelings about their project; Gabby's slightly apprehensive, but William's pretty stoked. He finds sewing to be a quality skill, as it will be probably be useful in the future. They're planning on making a miniature pillow. You can check out their "pre-sewing interview" on the videos page. Bonnie and Kathryn will be learning how to knit. They'll be working on their project over the long weekend as well. They plan on making a dishcloth. Bonnie Jo knows how to crotchet, so she's wondering if any of those skills will transfer over. Kathryn's pretty excited. Her great grandmother was an avid knitter, so she knows Granny B would be proud of her for attempting to learn. Kathryn's aunt agreed to give them a few pointers ahead of time. Knitting seems like "an old lady thing," but there's a possibility it might become their new favorite hobby, right? It seems we are all relatively excited about learning to knit and sew. We are most excited to get started with Genius Hour though! Hopefully, we'll be successful enough to have a creation to show for our new skill. Even if it isn't perfect, it will just be fun trying Crazy Idea #1. All the laughter and activity will be captured and displayed on our Galleries page.

Over the span of Genius Hour, we are going to learn and experience as many new random life skills as possible. With so many ideas, how could we possibly pick just one? Why not just put them all together and get a chance to try all kinds of different activities? We'll go through “The Bucket List of Crazy Ideas” and pick up all kinds of bizarre or beneficial skills along the way.
There are so many different escapades that students our age never get to explore. We want to push ourselves out of our comfort zone and learn as much as we can. We want to become more well-rounded individuals as a result. To figure out what we will attempt, we will draw ideas of want to do out of a sand bucket. (This is a literal representation of a bucket list!) Some of our ideas include learning how to drive a manual transmission, being able to write calligraphy, and becoming a more compassionate person with random acts of kindness. Hopefully, we will be able to empty the bucket. Anything we learn, whether it be a physical skill or self-awareness related, we will jot down on the outside of the bucket. Hopefully, by emptying the inside of the bucket, we’ll be able to cover the outside. We’ll be taking pictures throughout the entire project and listing them under our "Gallery" page so that you can all come along on our adventures with us. Our bucket will also be a token of our accomplishments. Ideally, this endeavor will enable us to achieve bragging rights on newly acquired expertise. |
